Description

The story of this portrait of a Middle Eastern notable is parallel to that of another painting in this section, signed and dated Swoboda 1912, for which we suggest you go ahead and read the description. They both come from an Italian family of Central European origins, specifically from Vienna. As noted in the other description, Rudolf Swoboda II the Younger was called the younger to distinguish him from his uncle of the same name, who was also a great painter. Swoboda is famous for the series of portraits of Indian and Middle Eastern rulers and notables, commissioned by the English Crown between 1885 and 1892. In all likelihood, this intense profile portrait is by Swoboda, probably a sketch made during his tenure with Queen Victoria.
