Madonna on cusped poplar panel
Tempera on poplar panel 15th-century
This painting has an uncommonly intense, beatific air and retains its original 15th-century cusped poplar-panel support.
Description
Mary is portrayed as a young woman who already wears a saintly halo while keeping her gaze lowered.
A semi-sheer veil protects her hair and surrounds her beautiful face with its thoughtful yet calm expression.
The Virgin Mary’s gentle posture evokes the purest expressions of proto-Renaissance Tuscan painting, and her sweet expression strongly recalls the work of 15th-century Florentine masters.
The painting is immediately recognisable thanks to its language very close to that of Alessandro Filipepi, also known as Sandro Botticelli.
An exhaustive conservative restoration was conducted to preserve the painting’s overall originality, especially the part of her face that remains practically intact.
