Description

Oil painting on canvas, The Baptism of Christ

The subject in this religious painting  shows a famous scene from the Gospel about the Baptism of Christ. In the foreground, Jesus is on the banks of the River Jordon, prostrate before Saint John the Baptist on the right who is baptizing Him with water. The dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit is above them and the heavens open because God is manifesting Himself  announcing with mysterious voice “This is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased”

In the foreground are several angels around Jesus and St. John the Baptist.

The painting features a magnificent gilded wood frame.

This painting from an Italian family’s private collection is from the school of Francesco Albani (Bologna 1578–1660). The artist’s original piece is at the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna.
