Very often, figurative art is characterised by the presence of allegories: i.e. scenes, characters and symbols that suggest a deeper or parallel meaning of a work.
For example, a flower that alludes to virginity or a fruit that alludes to profane love, a withered tree may signify old age while a hand gesture tells us about command, etc…
