Silvestro Lega
Silvestro Lega (Modigliana FC 1826 – Florence 1895)
“Among the most powerful individualities of our time,”
was how a very fine critic like Diego Martelli pronounced about Silvestro Lega, a recognition that, unfortunately, he would always be denied in his lifetime.
The beginnings
He soon attended the Academy of Fine Arts and became a student of Luigi Mussini’s “purist master”, based on the great masters of the Renaissance.
A convinced patriot and activist, Silvestro Lega in ’48 enlisted among the Tuscan volunteers.
Upon returning to Florence, Silvestro Lega attended Antonio Ciseri’s school in late ’49 and early ’50.
Exhibitions
In ’52 he exhibited at the Florence Velleda Promotrice and won the Academy’s Triennial Competition.
He took part in the Caffè Michelangiolo meetings with a certain diffidence .
Strong from his academic-purist training, he maintained a solid and rigorous style.
It was in Florence at the first Italian Exposition that he manifested a radical change and a rapprochement with the Macchiaioli.
The subjects of his paintings, mainly women taked in intimate domestic settings, show a society that wanted to redeem itself.
His works are exhibited in the major museums around the world.
