Aldo Mazza

Aldo Mazza (Milan 1880 – Gavirate, Varese 1964) Painter, advertiser, and illustrator. 

Studies

Mazza attended Brera Academy where he studied under Cesare Tallone. He lived in a garret where he drew and worked.

Work as an illustrator 

He is still best known for his skill as an illustrator, especially for children’s books and as a caricaturist. He made the satirical drawings for La partenza del crociato. [Departure of the Crusader]. 

Caricatures in Guerin Meschino

His caricatures and satirical cartoons appeared in the Guerin Meschino satirical magazine for more than twenty years. Connected to the Frigidarium group of cartoonists, he illustrated politicians’ ineptitude, class struggles, the excesses of sport, and the vanity of women.

Aldo Mazza’s exhibitions and shows

In 1914, Mazza took part in the Great Italian Exhibition of Caricature and Humor. The event was organized by the newspaper Il Numero.

As a painter at the 1906 Venice Biennale, he exhibited his painting Del Vespero. In 1924, he took part in the Exhibition of Contemporary Female Portraits at the Villa Reale in Monza. 

In 1935, he held a solo show at Galleria Pesaro in Milan.

He created some sixty posters with advertising or political subjects. These included the famous calendar for the Cooperative Union of Milan in 1917 and many theater bills and postcards.
